Carmen, rebellious birds

Carmen Today
Throughout the opera, a duo of narrators draws us into Carmen’s story. Little by little, the questions raised by the work resonate in their own lives. Between scenes, the story unfolds of two people living today who are trying to understand how to love one another—heirs to stories passed down from generation to generation without ever being questioned.
This fresh take on Carmen offers a traveling experience that brings the audience closer to the action.
In the villages, the town hall becomes Lillas Pastia’s tavern, the town square transforms into an arena… The audience moves among the performers, getting up close to the bodies, the voices, and the action, right at the heart of an open-air opera. Bizet’s music is there, the famous arias are there, and so is the story. For over a century, Carmen has been dying before our silent eyes.
Tonight, will we once again applaud death—or, at last, love?
